The Garden Pond

On the ice
two inches of melt-water.
On the water
a brittle film of ice.

A very happy New Year, everyone!

My sons and I have adored the ice recently – we live near a lake and have been down daily to observe the conditions and skim stones across the ice to hear it ‘sing’. We noticed the kind of conditions your poem describes on the days before the thaw. Thank you for your wishes, and have a wonderful 2011 yourself.

  2. Hi Floss! Nice to hear from you. I hope your new year will be good too.
